The Vladimir

Check out the Vladimir Pallet Mirror made out of old shipping pallets! Who says rough and unfinished isn't the new black! (not me)

Millions of pallets are used everyday to move goods across the world. Many times, these pallets come from exotic locations and are made from native exotic woods. But through shipping and clumsy handling, many of these pallets are damaged. A lot of the time they are simply discarded after use. These beautiful samples of another world typically turn into landfill or mulch.

This mirror was made using two partially destroyed shipping pallets. The scars on the lumber tell a story of its travels. While the form is reminiscent of old victorian french mirrors, its origin is far from gold leaf.

The Vladimir is available on commission, please contact Karl Zahn with all inquiries.

Sweet Honda Music

This commercial for Honda was shot out in Cali, where they routed out patterns of grooves in the road so when the Civic drove over them it would make a series of sounds caused by vibrations (think rumble strips on the side of the highway).

Classy Goon.

I didn't really get into wine (or goon) until my adventures in Australia. Alcohol is quite an expensive habit down under so many of the locals, or the ones that I hung out with, really appreciated boxed wine. I never really came across any boxed wine with eye-catching ( in a good way) package design... until now.

Now you can get a box wine that looks awesome and will get you drunk (win, win).
Conveniently available in 3L & 5L sizes.

Design School Spam

There is a great article at Design Observer about Graphic Design School Spam and the bastardizing of an entire academic process...

Album Art.

Album art is one of the coolest forms of graphic design. I have drawn a lot of inspiration from album covers over the years so this Play and Dsiplay Frame is perfect for easily transforming your classic and contemporary album covers into a hanging works of art.

Make a feature of your favorite vinyl record covers with these clever frames. The front of the frame flips open with the touch of a finger to let you change your display at whim, while the cushioned back ensures both single and double albums can be accommodated.

Historical Street Art

Everyone's favorite street artist/designer has already cemented his place in history during the 2008 US Presidential Elections with his posters and imagery of Barack Obama. Just when you think he couldn't be more of a big deal... he can be. The Smithsonian Institute is raising the $75K needed to purchase the giant, fine art version of the iconic Obama image used in the presidential campaign to put in the National Portrait Gallery.

This election has turned out to be historical on so many levels! I love it !
Long live street art!

So after a month of growing out my luscious Octobeard... I have finally tapped out.
But don't worry I made sure some pictures, typography and a badass logo came out of it.

And remember... beards are way cooler than society has made them out to be.
Next step: Decembeard: This time its personal!

Swirl.

I love these ink/watercolor illustrations by Nathan Manire. He uses swirls, lines and different shapes to make these awesome portraits of Hunter S. Thompson, Jack White and Tome Yorke. The use of shapes and lines to illustrate make the whole thing look very fluid and his subtle use of color really makes the portraits pop.

Takeaway Videos

I just discovered La Blogotheque's Takeaway Video Podcasts and they are friggin' amazing. Here is the basic premise of the series...

Every week, we invite an artist or a band to play in the streets, in a bar, a park, or even in a flat or in an elevator, and we film the whole session. Of course, what makes the beauty of it is all the little incidents, hesitations, and crazy stuff happening unexpectingly. Besides, we do not edit the videos so they look perfectly flawless, instead we keep the raw sound of the surroundings. Our goal is to try and capture instants, film the music just like it happens, without preparation, without tricks. Spontaneity is the keyword.

The Take away shows exist since April 2006. There was Chryde, who wanted to shake things up and find another way to share music, and there was Vincent Moon, who wanted to film music differently. Chryde offered Moon to go and film musicians in the city, Moon seized the idea and glorified it. Since then, other directors across the world joined this project, and we plan to extend it worldwide.

I watched most of my favorite bands but I can't stop watching the Bon Iver videos. THe Takeaway video of 'Skinny Love' makes me wanna pack up and go to Paris for their show tomorrow night!

Enjoy.
